For the Lord honored the father above the children, and he confirmed the right of the mother over her sons. Whoever honors his father atones for sins, and whoever glorifies his mother is like one who lays up treasure. Sirach 3:2
The real meaning of a Christian family life revolves around the life of Holy Family. In Christianity family is not a mere communion of few people sharing same beliefs, feelings and tangible assets.
Holy family was brought together by God itself, He who chooses Mary from the very beginning and associated with Joseph. And it was Holy Spirit who brought Child Jesus to that holy company. We believe that a family is created by God with the blessing from the sacrament of marriage. He is not only blessing to start a family but also helping the family to maintain in Him. “For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior”. Ephesians 5:22.
It is God’s desire that not two people are alike. That is why He created them as man and woman. Holy family was diverse, all three of them with different origins and different purpose and duties. The unique creation of a soul by God reflects in Holy family. So diversity is God’s glory in his infinite capacity. Then, why we can’t compromise to a different opinion in practical life? Why we cant compromise a differently behaving character?
Now the unity of Holy family. In unity they work together for the salvation. Their unity in God and Holy Spirit helps them to face greatest tribulations in their life, fear about authorities, poverty and uncertainty. Trinity should be the inspiring consideration for families. Jesus doesn’t have anything more to say than he heard from his father. Holy Spirit, in fact, elaborates only what Jesus taught us. “It is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work”. John 14:10. “My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me”. John 7:16. “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you”. John 14:26. So if the members of a family are united in God their different opinions will form into one opinion and one indication so that they can pray together and thus His promise will come true: “Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven”. Matthew 18:20.
The bond in Holy Family was not based on equality or passion but it was charity. A couple brought together for the sacrament of marriage in love will receive the blessing from God to be together forever. A couple brought together on the basis of a law in the society abide only in law but not in charity. A family started without Christ among them will not get the consecration to unite forever, to unite in thoughts and needs. Question of a same sex marriage is baseless, as the true purpose is not fulfilled from the very starting as a family. Holy family was for a common purpose, to act in union for the salvation. A family in Christian life is united forever for one purpose, to give birth next generation and cultivate the children in Christian life.
It is mystery how Jesus is in the middle of two people who unite together in marriage. Two sponge pieces cannot unite or mix together. But if we place these near to each other and pour a colour glue in between, they will change their colour and bond together. The nature and colour of the sponge will change according to the nature and colour of the glue. In marriage the couples will transform in nature and if they keep Jesus between them, Jesus will be in them and they will be Jesus so that they will bind together and will do the same acts what Jesus do. So the pledge in marriage will be strengthened only in Jesus to last forever. If the couples are together and in Jesus there is no space for extra marital affair.
Lord Jesus Christ, being subject to Mary and Joseph, You sanctified family life by Your beautiful virtues. Grant that we, with the help of Mary and Joseph, may be taught by the example of Your holy Family, and may after death enjoy its everlasting companionship.
Lord Jesus, help us ever to follow the example of Your holy Family, that in the hour of our death Your glorious Virgin Mother together with Saint Joseph may come to meet us, and we may be worthy to be received by You into the everlasting joys of heaven. You live and reign forever. Amen.
