I say to you, tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you. Matthew 21.
The essence of Christianity is changing our mind. We have to overcome the wicked instincts. And the beauty of Christianity is that always there is a place for someone decided to change his mind. A return is possible in Christianity. Christ , the door is always open.
In the story of two sons, Jesus narrates attitude of two sons of a man. The man asks them to go to vineyard where the first refused and the second agreed. But the first son changed his mind and went to vineyard and the second son didn’t go. Jesus resembles the first son to tax collectors and prostitutes.
There is an in-depth meaning for tax collects and prostitutes. Both of them led by desires. Basic nature is thirst for something. And never be satisfied. To satisfy their thirst they walk in opposite direction to the society and so obviously expelled from the community.
This is something like our own soul. The basic desires – sex, money and glory led us from the path to eternal life, the vineyard. Jesus demands a returning as the first son did. Notable factor is the son changed his mind. So the change needs to be come out from within. This is the reason many people can’t give up these little desires.
But the second son’s attitude is far more dangerous. He is pretending to obey his master as Pharisees do. Jesus called them tombs white washed. “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.” Matthew 23:27. A very dangerous situation to escape; in a tomb. And since it is whitewashed no one expect a contamination. As a tomb the occupant is already dead and decaying.
If we take it in a more positive way , they are waiting for a call. As Lazarus woke up from the dead a resurrection is possible. But we have to keep in our mind and be vigilant: Elijah was sent to only one widow. “There were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land; and yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow”. Luke 4:25. And Jesus woke up only a few from the dead.
Definitely the first son must have think again and again his encounter with his father. Meditation is an essential factor in Christianity. An encounter, which leads to an inner state of mind, will definitely lead us to the vineyard. The transformation starts from the meditation. Formation happens during meditation. So it is always good if there is a change of path and sometimes a return in our life.
