For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.Ephesians 6:12
The word ‘ Jihad’ is used in a most awkward meaning nowadays. Jihad means the spiritual struggle within oneself against sin. If it is so Bible is most concerned about Jihad.
Jesus was always a contradictory factor for people all over the time. He preached love but by the end he asked to buy sword. He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. Luke 22:36. It was very hard for his disciples to understand its actual meaning. So they said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.”
Jesus is making his disciples ready for fight. A fight against heavenly realms. Considering the meaning of purse and cloak will be worthy even at this time. Purse is our possession we carry all the time. In an inner meaning it is the most desirable items of our soul. The collections and gains of our soul. Sell your possessions and give to charity; make yourselves money belts, which do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near nor moth destroys. “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Luke 12:34. So Jesus remind us in the ultimate fight our deposits in heaven only will help us.
When the King arranged the feast and invited poor from the streets he was concerned about the man without a cloak. ‘And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment’. Matthew 22:11. The cloak represents our self. The parable of the lost son describes another story. When the lost son returns, father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet’. Luke 15:22. So selling our self is selling our dignity. In the final war what people will think of us doesn’t matter much. A naked soul before God is a powerful weapon in prayer. And the most difficult preparation- getting out of all impurities.
St Paul narrates the preparation for war in more detail.
Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. Ephesians 6:14.
The first thing is ‘stand’ or be alert. Know what Sin is. Many distort things will happen common in future, for example same sex marriage. Usually the society determines what is right and wrong. If society itself defines something right which is actually wrong it will erode our consciousness. Truth and righteousness are two sides of a coin and most difficult to practice. David knew this very well to sing: O LORD, who may abide in your tent? He who walks with integrity, and works righteousness, And speaks truth in his heart. Psalm 15. Faith is powerful to move the mountain. If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you. Matthew 17:20. Salvation is a powerful weapon as Paul said: I’m convinced that nothing can separate us from God’s love in Christ Jesus our Lord: not death or life, not angels or rulers, not present things or future things, not powers or height or depth, or any other thing that is created.
When we grow in Christian life we will understand that we don’t need to travel to do this war, but the war is within us, as we are his temples. So the war is started already but the price is also waiting:
Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors. Isaiah 53:12.
