Departing Gift of Jesus.

The real success of Mary was not in giving birth to Jesus. But it is in bringing up a Jesus and following him to Calvary. She appeared in a few scenes which is not that much dramatic as other ones are and talked only a few words in scriptures. But it gives a good and clear direction – Do whatever He tells you.

Mary is considered as a departing precious gift of Jesus, the last and the best gift he can give. Why he gave his own mother as his last gift to St John, who already has his own mother? The mothers on earth are not perfect. They cant make a Jesus out of their own children. But Mother Mary can do. You can find the change in accepting Mary as his mother in John. Disciples were always fighting for the first place. Mother of James and Jacob approach Jesus to ask ‘Say that my two sons may sit, one at Your right side and one at Your left side, when You are King‘.

But after being three days with Mother Mary John has changed a lot. When he hears from the woman that they can’t find the body of Jesus in his tomb he start to run with Peter. Young as he , reached the tomb first, but wait for Peter to enter first. He is ready to give up his first place. My mother can me but cant make Jesus out of me. Mother of John can make a John only, but cant make a Jesus from John.

The meaning of Ark of Covenant getting more clear in the gospel of Luke. Ark of covenant was the presence of God among Israel. There are three things in the Ark. There are three things in the Ark, the rod of Aron, Manna and the slates. Rod of Aron is belonging to priesthood. The word priest derives from pontifex, literally means bridge-builder. In New Testament it is Jesus the priest, the ‘bridge-builder’. The manna is also Christ. He himself says those who eat the manna from heaven will live forever. Completion of the law is Jesus. The new law is Jesus, it is love. So womb of Mother Mary becomes Ark of Covenant. Like the cherubs over the Ark, The power of God stand above Mary. Gabriel said to Mary: The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Luke 1: 35.

When Mary visits Elizabeth , Elizabeth asks the same question King David asks when he retrieve the Ark from Philistines. But why am I so favoured, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? Luke 1:43. King David is dancing before the ark. Elizabeth also mentions the same: ‘As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy’.

John uncovered the missing Ark in Book of Revelation. Revelation 11: 19’Then God’s temple in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant. And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake and a severe hailstorm’. In a sense every womb on earth should be like Ark of Covenant. Every mother on earth can make a Jesus.

In Cana Jesus says his hour is not yet come. The hour means suffering. Jesus expect a few more hours from the cross, a few more hours with his beloved mother. But Mary is not like any other mother on earth, she prefer his son’s suffering over the needs of people on earth. That is why a she get an acclamation from a simple woman on earth. And it came to pass, as he spoke these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. Luke 11:27. So let us pray to God to change our wombs to make Jesus- someone to stand against, stand in front, stand along and suffer for the humanity.
